Characteristic of area

Jung-gu plays a pivotal role in economy, culture, media and distribution.

It is the busiest area in the city day and night. There are Korean traditional houses and modern high-rise buildings next to each other. Some of the infrastructure facilities in the district are old and in need of sustainable maintenance. The housing development projects in Sindang-dong and Jungnim-dong are completed, forming a new residential area.

Located at the heart of Seoul, Jung-gu serves as the center of transportation, since main roads such as Toegye-ro, Eulji-ro, Cheonggyecheon-ro, Namdaemun-ro, and Wangsimni-gil as well as subway lines 1 ~ 6 pass through the district. It is also the central commercial district of Seoul with a combination of old and new shopping areas including large traditional marketplaces in Namdaemun, Jungbu, and Pyeonghwa Market, in addition to a number of department stores like Lotte and Shinsegae, shopping streets like Myeong-dong and Chungmu-ro, and large shopping malls such as Doosan Tower and Migliore.

Jung-gu is undoubtedly an important business district, and its characteristics as a business center are highlighted in areas such as Sogong-dong and Bukchang-dong where dozens of major companies, trading firms, and banks are based. Around these two districts, there are also major security firms, government administrative offices, professional service providers, publishers, and media firms. Thus, when viewed from a distance, the central area of Jung-gu is mainly composed of financial and government institutions, with the outskirts of this area largely occupied by shopping arcades and various service providers. In the areas of Eulji-ro and Cheonggyecheon Stream are an array of machine, tool, and part shops.

Visitors will easily notice that, behind the tall buildings along the streets, there are old traditional houses that were turned into restaurants, bars, and motels. More urban development projects are underway for this reason.
