Overview

Dongdaemun Design Plaza (DDP) is a complex cultural space built on the site of the former Dongdaemun Stadium in 2014. The construction began in 2009 and completed five years later, and the plaza was opened on March 21, 2014. Dongdaemun Design Plaza was constructed to meet a need for a complex cultural space that can hold commercial cultural activities and can assist the design industry upon an announcement made to change the site of Dongdaemun Stadium into a park and to develop an underground space. Dongdaemun Design Plaza is also called ‘DDP’ by taking English initials. Originally, Hadogam which was a branch camp of Hullyeondogam (Military Training Agency) in charge of safeguarding the city wall during the Joseon Period used to be situated on the site, but Japan built Gyeongseong Stadium on the site of Hadogam in 1925. After Korea’s freedom from Japan, Gyeongseong Stadium was renamed as Seoul Stadium. When Seoul Sports Complex was opened in Jamsil in 1984, Seoul Stadium was renamed as Dongdaemun Stadium in 1985. After then, a planning for demolishing Dongdaemun Stadium was announced, Dongdaemun Baseball Stadium was demolished first on December 18, 2007 and the soccer field of Dongdaemun Stadium was demolished in 2008. In the following year in 2009, Dongdaemun History & Culture Park was constructed near the site. The construction of Dongdaemun Design Plaza began on the site of Dongdaemun Stadium which was demolished on April 20, 2009, and the plaza was opened five years later on March 22, 2014. Dongdaemun Design Plaza is built in a fluid design and atypical shape to reflect urban and economic elements and the historical and cultural significance of the site. Accordingly, Dongdaemun Design Plaza was designed to be built without using straight lines or walls or interior columns, and was built in a shape resembling a spaceship or an astrospace. Dongdaemun Design Plaza has 3 stories above the ground and 4 basements and it is built on the total land of 62,692㎡ and the gross floor area of 86,574㎡. The interior of Dongdaemun Design Plaza comprises exhibition spaces, an education center, and a design museum. Outside the building, there are the Dongdaemun History & Culture Park, the Dongdaemun Stadium Memorial Hall, Gallery Mun, and Igansu Plaza.
