Dongdaemun History & Culture Park, affiliated with Dongdaemun Design Plaza (DDP), opened in 2009 on the site of the former Dongdaemun Stadium. Modern design and the relics of the Joseon Dynasty, such as the Seoul City Wall and Igansumun Water Gate, are truly harmonized and revered as a place of rest by Seoul citizens.
Many people visit Dongdaemun History & Culture Park to see its unique atmosphere, such as how the past, present, and future are all able to coexist. Dongdaemun History & Culture Park combined with inspiring exhibits and historical relics is a perfect picnic spot for family and lovers, while being an educational place for children. It is an ideal place for anyone and any purpose.
The place where Dongdaemun History & Culture Park is situated used to be Dongdaemun Stadium. This place is full of unforgettable memories for those who remember Dongdaemun Stadium. Before the stadium was demolished, numerous sporting events and games had been held here for 83 years. Now, only Dongdaemun Stadium Memorial Hall and two light towers help recall past glories.
Many relics and remains were excavated during the demolition of Dongdaemun Stadium. As a result, this place was named "Dongdaemun History & Culture Park". In addition to Seoul City Wall, Igansumun Water Gate, and Hadogam Site, numerous relics such as Joseon white porcelain and Buncheong Sagi (grayish-blue powdered ceramics) were excavated here.
The remains of Hadogam Site are on display in Dongdaemun Excavation Site Exhibition Hall, while the excavated ceramics, earthenware, and relics that date from the early Joseon dynasty to the modern era are on display according to time period or excavation site in Dongdaemun History Hall. Visitors can vividly experience the past of Seoul here. A variety of activities are provided so that visitors can easily understand the history of Seoul.
If you visit Dongdaemun History & Culture Park, you don't want to miss out on experiencing DDP that surrounds the park. DDP, emerging as a new landmark of Seoul, is the world's largest three-dimensional atypical structure. DDP brings the pleasure of shopping, exhibitions, shows, and various events to Seoul citizens.
DDP, a design-themed structure, consists of Art Hall, Museum, Design Shop, Eoullim Plaza, and Design Market. Each section has its own characteristics and beauty. Unlike the standard buildings we usually see everywhere, DDP's flowing curves and silver exterior resemble a huge spacecraft. DDP regularly attracts tourists and citizens with a wide range of events.
